Normally, the answer is "yes". If you can afford to make the payments and you otherwise meet the bankruptcy requirements, then yes. Talk to an attorney who can look at your situation.

What is the safest way to relieve debt without losing assets?

Bankruptcy laws allow you to keep a certain amount of property in a Chapter 7 bankruptcy case. Depending on what you own, you might not lose anything in Chapter 7 case. If you are not able to exempt all of your property, it may still be possible to keep the non-exempt property by filing a Chapter 13 case for debt consolidation and partial repayment.

There are a variety of options. Full sale, short sale, foreclosure, bankruptcy. Each option has factors that require discussion with an attorney familiar with each situation.
