How do I file for divorce if I have been married to my husband for 21 years and we have been apart for over 16 years?

Check with legal aid in your county of residence. I do not mean to be insulting but no attorney is going to invest about ten hours of time for free. I have handled numerous cases with your fact pattern, situation is too common. But, if you don't pay for attorney time and court costs, who will? Government does not provide free attorneys except thru Legal Aid office.

If there are orders in place and they are not being followed, a lawyer will file a petition for show cause. The other party will have to explain to the Judge why he/she is not following the previous orders. The Judge can sanction the offending party and order other remedies.

Can I seek legal counsel without hiring an attorney?

Answered by attorney Vanessa J. Gorden
Divorce lawyer at GordenLaw, LLC
Many attorneys, like my office, will charge a small fee to review documents only and help advise you of any alternatives or issues you may have missed. This option allows you the benefit of some counsel without the expense of full service representation. Best wishes!
