If you have a warrant take the money for the warrant to post it as bail. Then you will go to court out of custody. If you turn yourself in you will be taken to court in custody.

If I am unemployed and violated my probation for petty theft, is it better to go with a public defender or hire a private attorney?

Dude, if you are unemployed where do you think you will get the money to hire private counsel? Were you originally represented by the P.D. or by private counsel. If it was the PD just go back to him/her as you will not be able to hire a private attorney unless you are working and have savings.

Get an attorney and seek to keep this off her permanent record where it will follow her for the rest of her life and make sure she learns her lesson, otherwise it will be a waste of your time and money.
