In 2013, she was appointed to serve as a voting member representing the Ninth Circuit on the United States Sentencing Commission Practitioner's Advisory Group. Ms. Clarence is past President of the Bar Association of San Francisco, a prominent metropolitan bar association with over 8,000 members, was named in “Top 10 Litigators” by San Francisco Magazine and “Top 75 Women Litigators” of California by the San Francisco Daily Journal in multiple publications. Fellow: Nanci Clarence is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and was the 2007 President of the Bar Association of San Francisco. Before founding her own firm, Ms. Clarence was a litigation associate at Morrison & Foerster in San Francisco and an Assistant Federal Public Defender in the Northern District of California. Chambers USA's report on Ms. Clarence in 2007 described her as follows: “a 'go-to lawyer in the Bay Area', the 'fabulous' Nanci Clarence focuses on defending clients against allegations of securities fraud, antitrust and environmental crimes. She has also accumulated a wealth of experience in complex internal investigations involving whistle-blowing, trade secret violations and industrial accidents.” In 2008-2010, the Chambers reported: “the 'extremely clever and dynamic' Nanci Clarence is a 'is prized for her 'extraordinary dedication to clients'.” Commended for her amiable personality, she is said to have a 'great way of building bridges and working effectively with people.' 'She leads the way in a number of white-collar defense areas including international investigations, securities, antitrust and environmental matters.' Known for her high-profile representations in San Francisco, her recent work highlights have included the representation of executives in a number of ongoing DOJ and SEC investigations, including the alleged backdating of stock options, bank failures and mortgage fraud. Ms. Clarence is recognized as a prominent and outspoken leader in the legal community and beyond. She received the “Outstanding Service to the Court” award in 1996 for her work as the Chair of the Lawyer Delegates to the Ninth Circuit Judicial Conference for the Northern District of California. She has also served on The Board of Governors of the California Attorneys for Criminal Justice, the Executive Committee of the State Bar Litigation Section. Ms. Clarence also served as the Past President of the Edward J. McFetridge American Inn of Court. In 2008, California Supreme Court Chief Justice Ronald George appointed Ms. Clarence to the statewide Commission for Impartial Courts Task Force on Public Information and Education. Previously, the Chief Justice appointed her to the California Supreme Court's Advisory Committee on Lawyer Regulation, and United States Senator Barbara Boxer appointed her to serve on the Senator's federal court appointments review committee. Ms. Clarence also was appointed by Chief Judge Vaughn R. Walker in 2006 to the Northern District of California Committee on Professional Conduct. She served as President of the Bar Association of San Francisco in 2007.
