Can you be prosecuted for a crime after the time limit has ran out?

It all depends. I would need a lot more information. If charges were filed and the person failed to appear in court, as required, and the court issued a warrant, then the warrant prevents the statute of limitations from running. In other words, you can't evade the legal process.

What can I do to get out of a misdemeanor larceny charge?

Sounds like funds are going to be tight, so hiring a private attorney probably isn't an option. If I'm right, go to your court date and ask the judge to appoint the public defender. Do not try to represent yourself. There may be a way to beat your case, but you need an attorney.

How far can the DA get without the complainant?

Answered by attorney Nathaniel D Shafer
Criminal Law lawyer at Natty Shafer Law
If you don't object, they can keep requesting new court dates forever. You need to start objecting to continuances. It's a violation to your right to a speedy trial. Bring it to the judge's attention that you have already been to court 4 times and the prosecution is never going to be ready. It would probably be a good idea to hire a lawyer to help you.
