It depends. There are differences, depending on the cause of action involved. Basically, though, you ask for summary judgment when the other side's case is so weak that, even if you give them every benefit of the doubt, they do not have a viable claim. It is used as a kind of atom bomb to nuke the other side. If granted, it ends the case.
