Can my husband as me to pay all the improvements he spent on our house?

Answered by attorney John F Brennan (Unclaimed Profile)
Divorce lawyer at Musilli Brennan Associates, PLLC
You can certainly ask you to do just about anything, whether or not he can prevail is a different matter. The divorce court will look at the individual situation and attempt to fashion a fair and reasonable result if you do not agree between yourselves. Please realize, even given the shortness of the marriage, it can be shown that the improvements increase the value of the house during the course of the marriage he will be able to claim half of the appreciation.

How can I keep my health coverage if my husband wants divorce?

Generally not, although you may have COBRA rights (where you will have to pay the premiums). You cannot be covered as a spouse if you are not a spouse.

Is it illegal for a wife or husband to change the locks on their home without the other's knowledge?

Answered by attorney Jay A. Rigdon
Divorce lawyer at Rockhill Pinnick LLP
No. It is also not illegal for the spouse that has been locked out to break the locks, unless a court order has barred the spouse from the property. However, this kind of violence is usually not the way to go.
