Is there any advantage if I filed from where I am before accepting her papers from another state as far as alimony is concerned?

Answered by attorney Joanna Marie Mitchell (Unclaimed Profile)

Different states have different laws regarding alimony and entitlement to alimony. Without knowing more, no-one can answer your question. Best bet is to consult with an attorney in both states in order to first determine whether you can file in either state and then which state has the most favorable alimony laws.

See an attorney to draw up all the paperwork and send it to court. You first have to file and serve the initial papers and then you can be divorced six months afterwards.

How do I ask the judge for more time in a divorce?

Answered by attorney Ronald L Bornstein (Unclaimed Profile)
Divorce lawyer at Ronald Bornstein, Attorney at Law
You don't say what deadline you are under, like if the case has been scheduled for mediation or trial. Generally, a motion for continuance would be used to address more time before trial, or a motion to postpone or reschedule to move a mediation date. If your husband has an attorney, you really should not be doing this yourself. If you can't borrow funds from a relative, friend, or co-worker, and don't have access to any credit cards, you may try a motion for temporary relief and seek temporary attorney's fees, in addition to any other temporary relief you may be entitled to. Also, your local bar association or legal aid society may be able to assist you. Consult with an attorney to discuss the specifics of your situation and your options.
