How long before charges are filed if the accused is in jail?

Answered by attorney Mark R. Thiessen
Criminal Law lawyer at Thiessen Law Firm
Depending on the county and the grand jury could be a while. But he can plead guilty or get it dismissed by the DA before the case is indicted.

Can the district attorney drop charges against me?

Cynthia Russell Henley
Answered by attorney Cynthia Russell Henley (Unclaimed Profile)
Criminal Law lawyer at Cynthia Henley
Have you been charged? If so, you need a lawyer to represent you. The DA can drop charges (or not file them so you might be better off to get a lawyer regardless of whether or not you have been charged.) Keep up whatever bargain you made about making restitution and finishing paying it off - the sooner the better usually (but follow the lawyer's advice first.) You might also want to contact a bondsman to keep a lookout for a warrant so you can make a non arrest bond.

What is a surety bond?

Answered by attorney Kenneth G. Wincorn
Criminal Law lawyer at Law Offices of Kenneth G. Wincorn & Associates, P.C.
A surety bond is one issued by an entity that has put up collateral, generally with the sheriff, to guarantee that bond will be paid if it is forfeited. There are three types of bail bonds that we generally see: personal (free bonds guaranteed by the arrested person and authorized by a judge), surety bonds and cash bonds. The surety on a surety bond will generally charge a percentage for writing it, often 10-15%.
