What do I do about my petty theft charges?

Unfortunately, there is not a magic formula I can share to make this go away. It depends on many factors mainly who your lawyer is, who the DA is, and who the judge is. If you are not able to hire a private attorney, you should ask that the public defender be appointed at your first court date. But I can tell you, based on my experience in a number of different courts, you are in pretty good shape (relative to others charged with petty theft). A first time offender, that is fairly young (I'm assuming you are in your twenties because of nursing school), with good grades, has a good chance of receiving a generous offer from the DA to settle the case.

Will my son go to jail for stealing a vehicle?

Since he admitted to doing it the police mark seek an arrest warrant or the State's Attorney may file a criminal information thus charging your son with theft under Maryland Law. In light of the fact that he admitted to stealing the same he will probably be convicted if tried (Assuming his admission was voluntary). It is not likely that he would go to prison given his age, lack of criminal history, and the fact that this is a property crime as opposed to a crime against a person.

You need to hire a lawyer to represent you for both the new charge of theft and the hearing for the revocation of probation.
