Can I get a teaching degree with a misdemeanor theft charge?

Answered by attorney Kenneth G. Wincorn
Criminal Law lawyer at Law Offices of Kenneth G. Wincorn & Associates, P.C.
The issue is if you can get a teaching certificate and what are the policies of the institutions where you intend to teach. The answer depends on what kind of sentence you recieved and the level of the misdemeanor. It may be possible to try to reopen the misdemenor case by writ of habeas corpus under some circumstances. You need an analysis of your situation by an attorney in your area who is familiar with criminal law and the writ process.

What will happen if I did not pay my fines or go to my court date?

Criminal Law lawyer at Freeborn Law Offices P.S.
Looks like you have 2 strikes going against you. Depending upon your judge, the nature of the crime that you are in court for, and whether you have had other issues of non-compliance or failures to show, there is a good chance the judge could order jail time. You best speak wit an attorney, who hopefully may be able to rectify the problem. Whatever you do, don't ignore it because a warrant will issue (if it already hasn't) for your arrest.

You may have a claim for false imprisonment against the police officer and could sue to protect yourself against evidence they may have obtained in your home and potentially sue for monetary damages.
