Repayment of the funds wrongfully taken and the prosecution of the crime which that necessarily entailed are two separate and distinct things. If you have not made her whole by repaying of the money, it is also within her rights to go to the merchant to cash the check, point out that it was forged, and therefore should not have been cashed seeking the merchant pay her back.
