Can he still get a free attorney even if we can get enough money to bail him out for his domestic battery charge?

No one gets a "free" attorney. You have to repay the cost of a court appointed attorney. Bail doesnt matter, by the way. Income makes the decision of whether someone is eligible for a court appointed attorney.

What can I do if I was caught shoplifting?

You need an attorney. You may well get a deferred prosecution agreement which means you are on probation for a few months, do a number of community service hours, and attend a class, pay fines and costs, and after you complete everything the state drops the charges. You can also expect a letter from Publix attorneys claiming that you have to pay them around 200. Talk them down. Get an attorney in your area. This will all be over and you will later be able to get the record expunged.

What's the worst that can happen if I was caught stealing $100 and will this first offense be on my record?

The worst is that you could be sentenced to 1 year in the county jail. But you will probably be offered a deferred prosecution agreement, take a class, do some community service hours, pay fines and costs, and the case will be dropped, then you can have it expunged later.
