When a bankruptcy petition is filed, the "automatic stay" that goes into effect at the time of filing prevents creditors from making any attempt to collect on a debt. Typically, this includes prohibiting the creditor from contacting the debtor.

Filing a chapter 7 bankruptcy does not protect you from losing your horses. If you file a chapter 7 bankruptcy to prevent them from being sold at auction by the judgment creditor, the chapter 7 trustee will take possessions of the horses and liquidate them to pay your creditors.

If discharged you can just try it, if not, you may need the trustee's permission and if you get any money out of the re-fi, it may have to go trustee to pay creditors.
