Attorney, Entrepreneur, Business Executive, and Trusted Advisor
For more than four decades, Dan J. Kazanas has helped entrepreneurs, business owners, executives, investors, families, and property owners navigate complex legal and business challenges. What distinguishes him from many attorneys is that he brings not only extensive legal experience but also decades of real-world business leadership and executive management to every client engagement.
Unlike lawyers who have spent their entire careers practicing law, Dan Kazanas has personally built, financed, operated, acquired, managed, and sold businesses in highly competitive domestic and international markets. As a result, he understands that successful legal representation requires more than knowing the law. It requires understanding business operations, evaluating risk, protecting assets, preserving wealth, and developing practical solutions that align with a client’s immediate needs and long-term objectives.
Dan regularly serves as trusted counsel to entrepreneurs, C-suite executives, investors, established companies, emerging businesses, professionals, and associations. His clients value his ability to understand their industries, appreciate their business concerns, and provide strategic advice that not only resolves problems but also creates opportunities and helps avoid costly mistakes before they occur.
His practice encompasses business law, commercial transactions, contracts, estate planning, trusts, probate administration, real estate matters, and complex commercial litigation. He represents clients in disputes involving ownership interests, breach of contract, fiduciary obligations, partnership disagreements, real estate controversies, and other significant business and financial matters.
Real-World Business Experience That Benefits Clients
Dan’s legal career began after he graduated cum laude from the University of Missouri–St. Louis with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, followed by earning his Juris Doctor from Saint Louis University School of Law. During the first two decades of his career, he gained extensive experience in real estate, franchising, business law, estate planning, and bankruptcy.
In addition to practicing law, Dan has held executive leadership roles at successful businesses and technology companies. From 2001 to 2009, he served as President of O’Neil Lumber & Millwork, where his leadership helped drive the company’s remarkable growth and expansion. He later served as Chief Operating Officer and Corporate Secretary of Vertecra, Inc., an energy technology company, and subsequently as a senior executive at ideaRELAY LLC, a company engaged in technology transfer and product development.
These executive positions gave him firsthand experience with the challenges faced by business owners and corporate leaders, including growth strategies, financing, operations, acquisitions, contracts, personnel issues, risk management, and dispute resolution. Consequently, clients receive legal advice informed not only by legal principles but also by practical business realities.
A Strategic Approach to Problem Solving
Dan believes effective representation begins with understanding a client’s goals and developing strategies that protect what clients have built and position them for future success. Whether helping an entrepreneur launch a business, guiding families through estate and trust matters, negotiating complex transactions, or litigating significant disputes, his focus remains the same:
To provide experienced counsel, practical solutions, and trusted relationships that deliver meaningful results.
Commitment to Community and Leadership
Beyond his legal and business accomplishments, Dan has devoted substantial time to charitable and educational organizations. He has served in leadership roles with the ALS Association of Greater Saint Louis, where he chaired Board Development and Governance and helped strengthen the organization’s governance structure to support individuals living with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
He is also a founding member of the Hellenic Spirit Foundation, which supports numerous charitable causes, and serves on the advisory board of the University of Missouri–St. Louis Hellenic Government-Karakas Family Foundation Professorship. He has also remained actively involved with his alma mater, Saint Louis University School of Law.
Experience. Judgment. Perspective.
Clients do not retain Dan Kazanas simply because he is an attorney. They retain him because he understands the legal, financial, business, and personal issues that affect their lives and livelihoods. His blend of legal knowledge, executive leadership, entrepreneurial experience, and practical judgment offers clients something increasingly rare in today’s legal profession:
An attorney who understands not only the law, but the world in which his clients live and do business.
