The attorney who handled my case left the firm after the settlement, and for whatever reason they could not or would not contact him. I was told that the any money received would be non taxable. Imagine my surprise when the IRS came after me for $7000 in taxes and penalties 3 years later. I never received a 1099 until I called them screaming. Ultimately I was able to straighten it out with the IRS despite their refusal too change their position on the 1099. 2 years of aggravation 4 nothing
