While serving as leader of the Illinois House of Representatives, Alexander McCoy successfully sponsored the motion that the 13th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, banning slavery, be ratified. His partner, John S. Stevens, was counsel for many prominent businesses and financial institutions in central Illinois.
