Much depends on how you plead at the municipal court. Some guilty pleas have serious consequences in the immigration law. Further, depends on the of law the residence in the state the shoplifting took place. You need to consult an attorney who has a background in criminal law and immigration law, or who handled similar cases.

Do I have to stay in the United States if you get married for citizenship?

Immigration lawyer at Hans Burgos, P.A., Immigration Law Offices
You should not be concerned about filing a Petition for Relative (Form I-130) given that you both are not planning to reside permanently in the United States after your marriage. Consider filing a Form I-130 the moment you both decide to reside permanently in this country.

What happens to me if my spouse married me for a green card?

Answered by attorney Eric M. Mark
Immigration lawyer at The Law Office of Eric M. Mark
His green card is most likely temporary. After two years he will have to apply for a permanent card and have to prove that the marriage was entered into in good faith and that the marriage is still viable or that a divorced has been finalized. It is he who needs the lawyer. You may want to consider naturalizing to become a citizen if you have been here as a green card holder for five years or more. There are many benefits to becoming a citizen including the right to vote and knowing that you will never be deported, as well as the ability to bring certain relatives to the U.S.
