In Ohio, we are an equitable distribution state; Your spouse is entitled to one-half of your retirement earned during the course of the marriage; In order to determine what that amount would be, you would have the get what is called a Qualified Domestic Order (QDR) done; Sometimes the retirement plan will provide the necessary documents and compute the value for a fixed fee, otherwise you either have to have a lawyer do it or find a company that specializes in them

There is no such thing as legal separation in the state of Texas. I strongly recommend you schedule a consultation with a family attorney in the State of Texas to determine whether or not your wife actually got a divorce or under what circumstances a judge ordered you to pay child support if you two are still married. If you're only separated (not legally divorced), then yes your wife would need to sign the paperwork for you to purchase a home, so it is imperative that you get divorced as soon as you can to make sure you are the only one legally benefiting from this transaction.

To over simplify, you are entitled to half of everything acquired during the marriage—including you husband’s retirement.   The 20 year “rule” is only applicable to medical (and some other) benefits.   I recommend you not sign anything before talking to an attorney.    You should hire an attorney who is very experienced with military retirement issues as well as family law.
