Contested divorces can cost anywhere from a few thousand dollars to hundreds of thousands of dollars, depending on the situation. Hiring a lawyer is not like buying a loaf of bread at the grocery store, where the store wants to sell it to you, the product is well-defined, and there is a fixed price. In a legal case, there is someone on the other side trying to prevent you from getting what you want at every turn. The amount of money or seriousness of allegations in issue, tactics employed by the other side, your level of information and organization, and the amount of attention you require from your lawyer vs. what you can do on your own all affect how expensive your case may be.

Generally, if you file for divorce and your spouse is willing to sign a voluntary appearance, the soonest you can finalize is 60 days from the date the voluntary appearance form is filed with the Court. If you have children together, you will also need to meet the Parenting Act requirements. In complicated cases, the process can take up to a year or so because it can take some time to gather enough information.
