He can be held in jail until trial if it is necessary. Or he can come up with the bond money, or it could be lowered, if there are adequate explanations fro his failures to appear.

When you go to court, you can advise the Judge that you wish to hire your own attorney and request additional time to do so.  The Judge does not have to give you additional time, but in my experience the courts are generally amenable to giving a defendant a reasonable amount of time to put together the funds to hire their own attorney.  It will depend in large part in how long you need to retain counsel.
