Does time served begin when you are sentenced?

Answered by attorney Mark R. Thiessen
Criminal Law lawyer at Thiessen Law Firm
Time starts when you are sentenced. Depending on the crime you may get credit for time served. Depends on the plea agreement and the Judge.

Do I have to hire attorney if I have case of $ 157 of theft on me or I can go to court and ask for Probation or community service?

The clerk's office will send you a court date at the address you used when you exited the jail. You do not have to retain an attorney, and can plead guilty and get a fine and community service. Three years from now when you are denied a job because you have a conviction on your record make sure you remember that you screwed yourself, because you had no money.

There is no limit to how long someone could serve based solely on age. It would be up to the parol board to make that determination.
