You are an adult now but under $50 is a class C misdemeanor so fine only. But, it is a crime of moral turpitude so you want to try to get a deferred disposition so you can get it off your record. And STOP STEALING!

Can I be sued for the same crime that I served time for?

Yes you can definitely be sued for the same crime that you served time for, the civil case is a separate issue from the criminal case. If you pled guilty, that plea can be used in your civil lawsuit. If you pled no contest then it cannot be used.

Court appointed criminal lawyer does not seem to be providing adequate representation. What can I do?

Answered by attorney Kenneth G. Wincorn
Criminal Law lawyer at Law Offices of Kenneth G. Wincorn & Associates, P.C.
There are several ways to attack the problem: the best is to hire a lawyer. Think how much he would have earned if he had been out of jail in the first place even after paying the lawyer. Next is to file a speedy trial motion. This may be a good idea in some courts but not in others. Lastly is to file a request for appointment of a new lawyer based on lack of due diligence on the part of the present attorney.
