What can happen to a minor that commits Grand Theft Auto and is getting charges pressed against them?

Mark A. Broughton
Answered by attorney Mark A. Broughton (Unclaimed Profile)
Criminal Law lawyer at Mark A. Broughton, PC
That minor could end up going to juvenile prison (called different names depending on what state the minor is located), or a lengthy stay in the local juvenile hall. There are many factors that go into a judge's decision about what to do with a minor convicted of a criminal offense, especially a felony, so it is impossible to tell you what will or is likely to happen. But, to answer your question, any felony by a minor or adult can lead directly to prison.

Will a felony show up on my records if the case was counseled and closed by the probation department?

It will show up on your record, because you were arrested. I do not know how the disposition will read, but the arrest will read as a distribution charge. Who knows what you should tell your employer? Try: You asked for offenses after 18, and that was an offense before 18.

Do I need an attorney to turn myself in for a bench warrant?

I believe it's always safest to appear with an attorney. It demonstrates your commitment to the case and the idea that you will appear for future court appearances and will defend yourself accordingly. Judges and magistrates know that you've made a personal and financial commitment to the case and, consequently, they are more likely to give you a more reasonable bond when you appear with retained counsel. Beyond that, it helps to have someone who can analyze the case and evidence with you, appear with you and speak for you at all court appearances, and give you advice and guidance on how to handle the case and how best to resolve the matter. If your goal is keeping a conviction off of your record, that is something an attorney will try to help you achieve.
