What can I expect after my first offense for possession of marijuana?

Anthony O. Van Johnson
Answered by attorney Anthony O. Van Johnson (Unclaimed Profile)
Criminal Law lawyer at Anthony Overton Van Johnson Associates, P.C.
Because you are under the age of 21, a conviction for either an alcohol or drug related offense will result in a revocation of your driver's license. Additionally, if you ever hope to obtain a concealed weapons permit, you will likely be denied approval as a result of a conviction or nolo plea pertaining to an illegal narcotic (e.g., marijuana). Furthermore, upon a conviction of a misdemeanor in Georgia, the maximum punishment is up to 12 months in jail and a $1,000.00 fine on each count. If this is your first offense, you are more likely looking at a fine, community service, drug evaluation, and random testing. You may also be required to attend a drug treatment program or counseling. It would not be wise for you to appear in court without an attorney. An experienced attorney could possibly negotiate a resolution on your case without a conviction or a plea of "nolo contendre". Because of your age, you should contact an attorney immediately for representation on your case.
