I’d never hired a lawyer before. My dad and I went to Zimmer for a “free consultation” (which I was later sneakily charged for on my first bill, FYI be careful). He seemed great. He said all the right things and made my father and I comfortable. He assured me I could call, email, or text him any time and he would immediately respond. I was ecstatic to have found a lawyer I felt I could trust, and I felt would fight for me. We discussed money and how much this could cost me in the long run (general idea of the cost of a lawyer). He said, "If this gets dragged out we could be looking at $6500". We paid the retainer fee ($3500) in the office, expecting we'd be paying about another $3000. I typed up an 8 page outline of a timeline history for Zimmer to use to submit a petition to the courts for custody of my daughter and had a few instances where I needed Zimmer’s help ASAP (my daughters dad wouldn’t release her after his dinner parenting time, etc).
