John has been practicing law for over 21 years. His practice emphasizes criminal and traffic defense, residential landlord-tenant law, and community association law, injury law, and estate planning. He has appeared in state and federal courts across the Commonwealth, including the Supreme Court of Virginia and the Federal 4th Circuit Court of Appeals. His broad experience has enabled him to develop proven, cost-effective legal strategies with each of his clients.Since 2015, John has been serving as a representative on the Board of Directors for the Southwest Virginia Legal Aid Society, which represents the interests of low-income families throughout the western part of the state. In 2015 and 2016, John was awarded the Martindale Hubbell Client Distinction Award (Given to less than 1% of attorneys, recognized for excellence in quality of service, overall value, responsiveness, and communication ability)John also served as the Director of the Office for Student Legal Services at Virginia Tech, where he provided advice, counsel, and representation to the entire undergraduate and graduate student body. John’s experience as the director of that office gave him particular insight to the problems and concerns of the student population in the community. He represents clients in all courts within the New River Valley and Roanoke, and he often provides advice and counsel to students who face conduct reviews for violations of student conduct policies before the Office of Student Conduct at Virginia Tech, and the Dean of Students at Radford University. John also understands how devastating these matters can be to students and their families, and he is often available to meet with students and parents on an emergency basis after hours and on weekends.

Leave a review about your experience with this lawyer.John assisted our family to prepare for and get through a student conduct hearing. We were so pleased with his knowledge, supportiveness, and practical help. The expense was very reasonable and was so valuable in decreasing our anxiety, understanding the potential outcomes, and doing all that could be done to decrease the risk of negative outcomes. I highly recommend John for this type of work and would seek his counsel first now on any legal issue.
Connor has been wonderful to our family. Has gone over and beyond to keep us updated on the process and what to expect. Very responsive even outside business hours. He’s never treated us like “just another client “. Instead demonstrates compassion and respect. Would highly recommend this firm!!!
Mr. Robertson is absolutely one of the best people I’ve had the chance to work with. At the time of him helping me, I was a student at university. I was accused of false charges with University Conduct Review. I worked with him through two different incidents with a range of charges, one of which included alcohol violations. Without Mr. Robertson I wouldn’t have been able to continue my education and also I wouldn’t have survived a moment in the Conduct Review hearings. Mr. Robertson was extremely knowledgeable about all the things I was facing. He gave me great advice and counsel about everything as well. Going into the hearings, I was extremely prepared. He helped me practice potential questions I would be asked, and helped me revise mulitple oral statements. They were precise and allowed me to defend myself in the best manner I could. If I had to go through the whole thing again, I 100 percent would want Mr. Robertson by my side again.
I am a long-time Blacksburg resident. John Robertson has been an invaluable legal resource. Issues such as property, finances, or contracts are critical issues in one’s life and they demand attention to detail. He not only works for a client, but with a client. I was recently out of state and needed a POA on short notice. It was in my phone inbox and ready to print in less than an hour. His responsiveness and knowledge of the vast world of legal matters is impeccable.
I chose to call Mr. Robertson because of his experience in criminal law. Although Mr. Robertson could not take my sons case (2 Felony Charges) he talked to me several times on the phone and advised me on the law and the pending charges against my son. Mr. Robertson took the time to gather letters of reference for my son and presented them to the prosecuting attorney with an amazing letter. He did this for nothing in return. He is not only caring but honest. I would highly recommend him!!
John Robertson was so very helpful in my daughter's traffic case. Always understanding and respectful. Having gone through the initial trial for her as we had contracted him to do, he was kind and diligent enough to go again for her to assure that the court ordered results were altered to accommodate her health issues. Others would have used the situation for gain; John did not. His assistance to us was invaluable.
Mr. Robertson was exceptionally courteous and helpful throughout the entire legal process. Even after receiving payment (which was very fair and competitive), Mr. Robertson worked to answer my questions and offer advice. It is evident he is not only experienced and knowledgeable as a lawyer, but also empathetic. Because of this, I was able to resolve my legal problems quickly and return to my normal life. I would completely recommend Mr. Robertson to friends and family.
As much as I dread having to go through the courts for anything at all, in this particular situation John has enabled me to do so with confidence, clarity and understanding. To me that is priceless and his assistance has far exceeded any expectations that I may have had. I am so relieved that I now have a dependable and knowledgeable, legal point of contact as a landlord.
John is courteous, professional and cares for his clients. He is the best attorney that I have ever dealt with.
Little did we know that inheriting rental property would become a nightmare for us. After consulting with a friend's husband who manages a local rental company, we were directed to Mr. Robertson for help with a tenant issue. Mr. Robertson was very easy to talk to, clear and concise with his explanations, and followed up with us by email as events and issues developed. In the courtroom, he made us feel as comfortable and we were well prepared to answer any questions that were directed toward us. We were very pleased with the outcome of our situation and have since sought his help on other rental matters. We would highly recommend Mr. Robertson to anyone that has Landlord/Tenant/Rental issues.
