My son made a verbal commitment to a dental residency program before "match" occurred. Unfortunately, the program sent a letter referring welcoming him to the program; but he never received a contract to sign. As "match" approached, he became very uneasy that all he had was a verbal commitment; and was concerned that if he did not participate in "match" and the dental residency program for some reason decided not to honor their verbal commitment - he would miss the opportunity of being accepted into a dental residency program. There are some very specific and career limiting ramifications here. Professional students know the "rules of match". Very very serious consequences if this is not handled properly.
