With over two decades of experience in intellectual property law, Steven War is a highly skilled attorney specializing in obtaining trademarks, patents and copyrights, enforcing trademarks, patents and copyrights against others, and defending those accused of infringing trademark, patent, and copyrights. Mr. War's expertise spans a diverse range of technologies, including medical devices, mechanical devices, internet applications, and satellite systems.
Before starting War IP Law PLLC, Steven was the practice chair for intellectual property litigation at McNeely, Hare & War LLP. Prior to that, Steven honed his skills at several national and international law firms, including Dickstein Shapiro LLP, Fulbright & Jaworski LLP, Fish & Richardson P.C., and Howrey & Simon. His extensive background encompasses trademark prosecution, trademark litigation, patent litigation, patent prosecution, and providing opinions on freedom to operate, validity, and infringement. Steven has successfully prosecuted trademarks and patents across various technologies, such as medical devices, computer memory architecture, internet authentication systems, digital cameras, digital circuits, communications, and printers.
Prior to embarking on his legal career, Mr. War spent fourteen years as a systems engineer for prominent organizations such as IBM's Federal Sector Division, Computer Technology Associates (CTA), and Orbital Sciences Corporation (OSC). During this tenure, he collaborated with government entities including NASA, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Department of the Army, and the United States Coast Guard. His responsibilities included identifying user requirements, systems design, testing and evaluation, field support, acceptance testing, and active participation in various user groups. His engineering expertise spanned satellite systems, helicopter design, the FAA's Voice Activation and Control System, and artificial intelligence systems. Before entering the field of systems engineering, Mr. War served seven years in the United States Navy, including time as an electronics technician.
Steven War is admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the Commonwealth of Virginia, the District of Columbia, the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. He is a member of the American Bar Association (ABA) and the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA). Mr. War has also shared his knowledge by lecturing on various occasions, covering the basics of preparation and prosecution of U.S. trademark applications.
A graduate of the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Science in aerospace engineering, Mr. War furthered his education, earning a Masters of Science in electrical engineering from Syracuse University in 1990. He completed his J.D. at Georgetown University Law Center in 2000.
