Jay Suen’s practice focuses on estate planning, trust administration and tax controversy matters. Prior to joining Brothers Smith, LLP, Jay worked at a legal publishing firm, a “Big 4” accounting firm, and big law and tax/estate planning boutique law firms.
In his estate planning practice, Jay advises mid-to-high net worth individuals and families on designing and implementing their estate plans using a combination of revocable trusts, irrevocable trusts and closely held business entities to achieve each client’s objectives. Where clients or their trusts hold low basis assets, Jay assists such clients with basis planning to reduce the impact of capital gains tax.
In his tax controversy practice, Jay assist individuals and small businesses by defending tax returns selected by taxing authorities for examination, filing and pursuing refund claims, appealing property tax reassessments, requesting abatement or reduction of tax penalties assessed and establishing alternative payment plans.
