I found M. Gauthier's details on the French consulate website and contacted him to obtain an opinion letter for a foreign divorce from France in order to obtain an Ontario marriage license. His fees were higher than average, his knowledge questionnable and he failed to deliver the document on time. I ended up working with another lawyer who provided the opinion letter within a week. I then raised my concerns to the Law Society which resulted in a caution to be added to M. Gauthier’s Law Society regulatory record. I would advice anybody with the intention to work with M. Gauthier to record all conversations and request signed transcripts of phone conversations and meetings. Before starting any procedure, I would advice the client to clarify the amount of hours M. Gauthier will intend to spend on the matter as even though my initial invoice included « To all professional services rendered in connection with the above-noted matter … », on 2 occasions M. Gauthier requested additional fees.
