About M. Tyus Butler, Jr.

Ty Butler is a partner with Bouhan Falligant and has practiced extensively in the areas of labor relations and employment law and bankruptcy since 1974. He has represented employers and management in the public and private sectors before the National Labor Relations Board, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, U. S. Department of Labor, Wage & Hour Division, Occupational Safety & Health Administration, the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs, Immigration & Naturalization Service, the Employment Security Agency of the Georgia Department of Labor, as well as in federal and state trial and appellate courts. His practice has included all aspects of employment law such as advising and representing employers in labor relations and collective bargaining, employee grievance, arbitration, federal and state administrative proceedings, hiring and personnel policies, practices and procedures, as well as employment discipline, termination and other litigation. In the bankruptcy area, Butler has represented creditors and corporate debtors in Chapter 11 reorganization cases in the United States Bankruptcy Courts for the Southern District of Georgia and other Georgia districts, as well as in the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York and the District of Delaware.

Butler is a member of the Labor and Employment Law and Bankruptcy Law Sections of the State Bar of Georgia. He serves as a designated Management member of the American Bar Association’s Labor and Employment Law Section and serves on that Section’s Committee on Practice and Procedure under the National Labor Relations Act and the Committee on Regional Practice – Region III (South). He is a member of the Federal Bar Association’s Labor Law & Labor Relations Section, and that Section’s Committees on Labor Arbitration, Equal Employment Opportunity, and Collective Bargaining. In addition, Butler is a member of the American Employment Law Council, the Georgia Employment Law Center, the Industrial Relations Research Association, and the Savannah Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management. Butler has also served as Chairman of the Bankruptcy Committee of the Savannah Bar Association and is a graduate of Leadership Savannah. Currently, he is a member of the Workforce Development Committee and the Legislative Steering Committee of the Legislative Action Council of the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce.

A graduate of the University of Georgia, Butler earned an A.B. in economics with a concentration in labor economics, in 1970. He received his J.D., cum laude, from the Walter F. George School of Law, Mercer University, in 1974. While in Law School, Butler was lead articles editor of the Mercer Law Review, director of the Legal Writing Program, and a member of the Brainerd Currie Legal Honor Society. Butler was also the recipient of several American Jurisprudence Awards, the George B. Connell Scholarship Award, and was selected by Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity as its Outstanding Graduate of 1974. In addition, the faculty of the Law School chose him for inclusion in Who’s Who in American Universities. He serves as the Chancellor for St. John’s Episcopal Church.
