About Woodrow J. Halstead III

Woodrow Halstead is Board Certified in Criminal Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He began his legal career over 20 years ago as a prosecutor for Bexar County, Texas. He received his B.A. from Texas A&M University and J.D. degree from St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio, Texas. For 14 years Woody represented the State of Texas as a prosecutor in thousands of criminal cases ranging from misdemeanors to murders and concluded his prosecution career as the First Assistant for the Bexar County D.A.’s Office. His ability to assess his clients’ cases from both a prosecution and defense perspective enables him to provide invaluable insight to the evaluation of their cases.

Woody’s legal experience includes work as a civilian attorney with the Department of the Air Force where he represented military members undergoing “fit for duty” evaluations. In addition to his civilian legal practice, Woody served 12 years as a Judge Advocate in the United States Army Reserve and is currently serving as an officer in the United States Air Force Reserve. Additionally, in 2020, Woody was appointed by the Bexar County Commissioners Court to serve as a part-time Criminal Law Magistrate Judge, assuming a position he had previously held from 2013-2014.

Woody is licensed to practice by the Supreme Court of Texas and is admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces and Federal Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Texas. He is a former member of the Board of Directors for the Texas District & County Attorneys Association and currently serves on the Board of Directors for Crosspoint, Inc. a local nonprofit organization whose mission is to build safer and stronger communities by empowering individuals to lead productive lives.

Woody brings years of trial law experience to Daniel & Halstead. One high-profile case of note, Woody was part of the defense team for Gary Cain, a business developer who was charged with theft in the deal to bring Rackspace, a high-tech cloud computing company, to the City of Windcrest. Specifically, Gary Cain, along with his brother Ronnie Cain, were accused of defrauding Rackspace of $6.9 million and falsifying an invoice of $2.8 million to the City of Windcrest that was earmarked to build a road for Rackspace employees. The defense team argued that there was no fraud, nothing was hidden and there were no back-door dealings. After an 11-hour jury deliberation, Gary Cain was found not guilty of all charges. Charges were later dropped against Ronnie Cain when it became apparent that the case could not be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
