About Mr. Joseph Alexander Marshall

Joseph Alexander “Alex” Marshall is a 2015 graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Law at Chapel Hill and earned his undergraduate cum laude from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Alex is an AV Preeminent Peer Rated Lawyer at Martindale Hubbell, he is recognized by North Carolina Super Lawyers' Rising Stars and Best Lawyers in America's Ones to Watch. He is a member of the North Carolina State Bar, the Wake County Bar Association, the 10th Judicial District Bar, and the National Black Lawyers Top 40 Under 40. He joined the criminal defense section of DeMent Askew & Johnson in 2021.

For nearly six years Alex served Wake County as an Assistant Public Defender. Over that time he gained an unparalleled level of experience handling thousands of cases ranging from DUI and traffic matters to murder. He approaches his trial practice with focused consistency and is a dedicated and fearless advocate for his clients.

Alex says, “People accused of crimes often need someone to walk through a journey with them that may feel shameful or frightening who can provide a different perspective on that self-view. They need to know someone is in their corner that they believe will fight for them when they need it most .”

The son of ministers, Alex, too, is a licensed minister drawn to service through gratitude. He lives in Durham with his wife and kids, and their tightly knit family group all close by. He is a physical fitness enthusiast and athlete, soccer and basketball youth coach, and a DIY builder hobbyist.

Mr. Marshall was very responsive, communicative, and professional. Although, we did not win my case, were able to negotiate a favorable decision. I would most definitely recommend him as a n Attorney for all your legal needs.

Mr. Marshall was very knowledgeable and extremely helpful and determined to win my case. I moved across the country and he still answered all of my questions, was great at communicating and making sure that we were on the same page regardless of the time difference and being unable to meet in person.

Working with Mr.Marshall exceeded my expectations! He was very knowledgeable, passionate, good at explaining what was going on, and he won my case!!! The biggest thing for me was that he really fought and stood up for me no matter what the defense said he had a comeback! I could not have asked for a better person to represent me.
