About Douglas Noreen

Douglas is a litigator focused on two areas of practice: estate, trust and guardianship litigation and eminent domain matters. His ability and desire to work towards win/win solutions for his clients has enabled him to reach successful outcomes in both areas.

ESTATE, TRUST AND GUARDIANSHIP LITIGATION

In Douglas’ estate, trust, and guardianship cases, he has extensive experience involving disputes that arise both while relatives are making estate choices, and after loved ones have passed away. The understanding that estate matters are often highly personal and emotional for clients is never far from his mind. It is his goal to remain sensitive to these issues while being an aggressive advocate for those he represents.

Douglas has handled a variety of matters including will contests, IRA beneficiary designation changes, and pension plan, beneficiary changes, gifts made during life, and disputed deeds to property.

ESTATE, TRUST AND GUARDIANSHIP LITIGATION EXPERIENCE:

  • Recovered over $100,000 in funds from an IRA for a surviving spouse when a beneficiary designation was changed at the end of her husband’s life.
  • Recovered real estate property for a client after his father executed a deed to a third party while he was suffering from memory issues.
  • Successfully defended a client (who was her father’s caretaker) in a case initiated by her siblings after she inherited the bulk of her father’s estate following his death.
  • Successfully petitioned for a client to be appointed guardian of his elderly mother after discovering his sibling was removing funds from the mother’s accounts.
  • Successfully defended against an attack on a will written by an elderly person which favored a long-time close friend/caregiver over an estranged child.

EMINENT DOMAIN

In Douglas’ eminent domain and condemnation practice, he has extensive experience involving property takings, road widenings and other eminent domain projects that can affect a commercial structure, site access, traffic flow, parking and ultimately business success.

EMINENT DOMAIN EXPERIENCE:

Douglas handles all types of eminent domain projects, which often involve multiple and varied issues. He has been able to successfully advocate for redesign of projects, including in one situation keeping an access point open which the state Department of Transportation was going to close, which in turn allowed the store to remain open. He has also handled personal property and sign relocation issues. And most importantly, he is a strong advocate in obtaining maximum compensation for his clients, considering all damages to the site.

SPEAKING AND PUBLICATIONS

Douglas recently presented a continuing education program to other North Carolina attorneys entitled “Probate Disputes and Litigation.” In addition, he authored the materials for a lecture given at the North Carolina Bar Association’s Annual Estate Planning and Fiduciary Law Program in 2013 entitled “How to Navigate a Fiduciary Litigation Case.” He has also written several articles including “Fighting Wal-Mart: The Future of Combined Reporting in North Carolina” which was published in State Tax Notes, a publication of Tax Analysts; and he co-authored “State HHS v. Thompkins: No Time Limit on Medicaid Claims?” which was published in The Will and the Way.

EDUCATION AND MEMBERSHIPSDouglas is a native of Apex, North Carolina and received his B.A. in 2007 from Davidson College where he was recognized with the Thomas D. Sparrow award for intercollegiate athletic and campus leadership. In 2010, he received his J.D. from the George Washington University. He is active in promoting charitable activities in the community and serves on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Chapter of the ALS Association and was the past President of the Board for the Friends of the City of Raleigh Museum in downtown Raleigh.

Hired Attorney Douglas Noreen

I was referred to Doug by another attorney and it was one of the best referrals I've ever had, For starters, I was in Australia and Doug was in North Carolina and that time difference made communications a bit tricky but he made himself available well after hours to talk to me and generously offered all the time we needed to thoroughly discuss what was going on and look at options. I left that initial call feeling exponentially clearer and more confident than I had after speaking to 6 other attorneys. Doug got clear on my desired outcomes and then he just went to work, largely behind the scenes. He took initiative, he was positively proactive, he continued to go above and beyond and, in the end, it was the best outcome possible. He was also very mindful that I was highly price-sensitive and delivered excellent value for money. He has my highest possible recommendation. The legal profession is lucky to have someone like Doug in its midst.

Hired Attorney Douglas Noreen

After six months of research to locate the best estate attorney in North Carolina, I found Mr. Noreen. Everything checked out: the firm, their record, legal knowledge and competency, good people with integrity, principles, ability to communicate, persistence, loyalty, kindness. All my favorite qualities. An attorney who is a good person with expertise in the courtroom, handling the case and the client, and who is willing to do whatever is required to be successful without taking shortcuts is probably a rare combination. He proved to be dedicated and accountable, determined to provide good value without compromising, willing to hang in when times were tough until the end. I don’t know what more you could want from an attorney.

Working with this lawyer was an easy, great experience. Although I wish I didn’t need an attorney, this lawyer was a great one for me. He was professional at all times. He understood where I was coming from and did his best to look after my best interest. He heard my need and my heart and was on top of things to get the job done. I can’t say we won our case but I can say the lawyer got the best results there could be. I would recommend him to anyone and would use him again myself if the need should arise. He did his best to keep me informed of the case and steered me in the direction he felt I should go but at the same time he gave me my options. You can’t go wrong with using the attorney.

Consulted Attorney Douglas Noreen

I was very appreciative of Mr Noreen’s continual willingness to assist me and my sibling in understanding and working through the estate settling process, I would recommend him and Stallings Team first to anyone in the same predicament I was certainly!

I would not recommend Doug. He and his whole law firm alter agreements and do not follow recommendations from his clients. I would not hire him again. He is unethical and does not care at all about his clients well being

I had a bad experience with Douglas Noreen and do not recommend him. It is all about the money with him and not about what is best for your legal case. You will be overcharged for his services and wonder what exactly did you pay for also.
