About Buxton S. Copeland

Buxton S. Copeland (“Buck” ) has dedicated his career to defending employers, carriers, and insurers in workers’ compensation cases across North Carolina. Since joining Cranfill Sumner LLP in 1987, he has represented clients in hundreds of cases before the North Carolina Industrial Commission, the Full Commission, the North Carolina Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of North Carolina.

With more than 35 years of experience, Buck brings a deep knowledge of the North Carolina Workers’ Compensation Act and a proven track record of successful outcomes.

A TRUSTED ADVOCATE FOR EMPLOYERS

For more than three decades, employers have turned to Buck for his strategic defense, deep industry knowledge, and commitment to protecting their business interests. Whether handling a complex trucking injury case, an occupational disease claim, or defending an uninsured employer, Buck is dedicated to achieving the best possible results for his clients.

DEFENDING EMPLOYERS ACROSS INDUSTRIES

Buck represents a wide range of businesses-including manufacturers, trucking companies, retailers, and small businesses-in claims involving:

•Workplace accidents and injuries
•Occupational disease claims
•Medical causation disputes
•The “going and coming” rule
•Intoxication and substance use defenses
•Independent contractor classification

HELPING UNINSURED AND NON-INSURED EMPLOYERS

In addition to defending insured employers, Buck frequently represents uninsured and non-insured businesses before the NC Industrial Commission. Many employers discover they are uninsured only after an employee files a claim or the Commission assesses civil fines or criminal penalties.

Buck helps these businesses by:

•Defending against employee claims
•Reducing or mitigating penalties
•Advising on steps to regain compliance with the Workers’ Compensation Act
•Protecting operations during a financially high-risk situation

He has guided small businesses, contractors, and family-owned companies through these challenges, providing reassurance and practical solutions when the stakes are highest.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE IN TRUCKING CLAIMS

Buck has extensive experience representing trucking companies in workers’ compensation cases. These often involve complex issues such as owner-operator relationships and the unique statutes that apply to the transportation industry. Many of these claims involve serious injuries or fatalities, and Buck is skilled in providing strong defense strategies to protect trucking businesses from costly outcomes.

RECOGNIZED FOR LEGAL EXCELLENCE

Buck maintains an AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell, a peer-review honor that recognizes the highest standards of legal skill and professional integrity. Buck has also been selected for inclusion in Best Lawyers in America in the field of Workers’ Compensation Law - Employers each year since 2017. Clients and colleagues alike know him as a trusted advocate who provides practical, results-driven defense.
