When I spoke with Richard Jan Schlichtmann, I encountered a down-to-earth, deeply humanitarian, generous with both his time and knowledge, and unselfish in every sense. He was pleasant, thoughtful, and astonishingly giving. He helped me with our neighborhood’s ongoing case against W.R. Grace. By the end of our conversation, I felt compelled to tell him that it is because of rare individuals like him that the world has a chance to become a better place—people who place the welfare of humanity above their own personal gain. His book, A Civil Action, has been on my shelf for more than two decades, since my son attended law I read it, and I saw the film adaptation years ago. Still, despite that knowledge, my family and I—along with 183 of our neighbors—were misled into believing that building our homes right next to a W.R. Grace chemical facility was completely safe. We were told by the NV Homes sales team that these were strictly “administrative daytime operations”.
