Education and Early Career
Enlisted in the U.S. Army after high school, serving in both South Korea and Japan.
Graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a bachelor’s degree in 1966.
Worked as a laborer in the open hearth furnace at the Homestead Works of U.S. Steel and was a member of the United Steel Workers of America.
Earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law in 1971.

Began his legal career as a staff attorney for Neighborhood Legal Services Association.
Opened a private law practice in Pittsburgh, focusing on plaintiff’s personal injury litigation.
