I am sharing my experience with attorney Donald Smith because I believe others deserve to know what my family went through. In 2022, my 11-year-old son, who is Black and has disabilities, was physically attacked by another child. A witness later came forward and confirmed that my son was hit and pushed first. Despite that, I felt that from the moment my son and I walked into Donald Smuth’s office, we were judged unfairly. Throughout the case, I felt that my son’s disability and the fact that he was defending himself were not given the consideration they deserved. I ultimately paid approximately $7,000 related to the case, including what I believe was an unjust medical bill. One statement that has stayed with me was when Mr. Smith said, “Welcome to Johnson County.” I interpreted that comment as reflecting the unequal treatment my family experienced. I also recall him saying that if my son had been white, he would have been treated differently.
