About Eric L. Routman

Mr. Routman has been handling commercial property and casualty insurance and reinsurance coverage matters throughout the United States since 1980. During this time he has advised on and litigated disputes over general property and liability policies, lawyers, accountants and architect & engineers professional liability policies, and media professional and directors and officers liability policies, as well as many other types of policies and insurance related agreements.

As part of his coverage practice, Mr. Routman is actively involved in resolving commercial insurance and reinsurance disputes through alternative dispute resolution. He serves as both arbitrator and mediator. He is a paneled neutral at ADR Systems, Inc. He presently serves as

vice chair of the American Bar Association's International Committee, and as that committee's liaison to the American Bar Association's Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee.

Mr. Routman provides clients with risk management advice, including that relating to insurance procurement, contract drafting, risk avoidance and other means of risk transfer. He advises clients on captive insurance company formation and captive insurance company management, including reinsurance procurement and claims management.

From 2000 until 2005 Mr. Routman served as Vice President of Attorney Liability Assurance Society, Inc., a Risk Retention Group (ALAS). ALAS is a captive insurer of large law firms. Mr. Routman's responsibilities included underwriting and loss prevention management.

Mr. Routman has been an active author, lecturer and teacher regarding insurance related issues since 1985. He regularly speaks throughout the country on a myriad of insurance topics relating to his practice areas of expertise. He has authored the following articles: Investigating the Feasibility of a New Off-Shore Captive Domicile: An American Indian Reservation, CPCU Journal, Fall, 1999; The Insured Filed for Bankruptcy: What's Next for the Insurer, Journal of Reinsurance, Spring, 1999; Back to the Future: Coverage Claims Under Corporate Predecessor Liability Policies for CERCLA Liability, CPCU Journal, Summer, 1998; Declaratory Judgment Expense: Who Pays?, Global Reinsurance, Fall, 1994; and Cleaning Up America: Superfund and its Impact on the Insurance Industry, CPCU Journal, Fall, 1988.

Mr. Routman serves as a Board Member and as an Instructor, at the Insurance School of Chicago. He was awarded the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation in 1985. He serves actively in the Chicago Chapter of CPCU, serving as a Board Member since 1994. From 1998 until 2000 he served as President of the Chicago CPCU Chapter. In 1993 he helped found the CPCU national section Consultants, Litigators and Expert Witnesses; he served as Chair of this Section from 1996-1999. Mr. Routman served as National Governor of the CPCU Society from 2000 until 2003. From 2002 until 2003 he also served on the CPCU Society Executive Governing Committee.

Mr. Routman was admitted to the Illinois Bar in 1980. He was also admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois and the U.S. Court of Appeals, Seventh Circuit. He has been admitted to innumerable state and federal courts pro hac vice.

In 1980, Mr. Routman graduated from John Marshall Law School, receiving his juris doctorate. He received his undergraduate degree in accounting from George Washington University.

Mr. Routman is a member of the Chicago and American Bar Associations. In addition to his appointment mentioned above, he is also a member of the American Bar Association's Tort and Insurance Practice Section Insurance Law Committee.
