About Anthony J. Pope

Anthony J. Pope is a distinguished trial attorney in New Jersey who gained international recognition in 2001 when his client in the heavily reported Continental Airlines "air-rage" case was acquitted.

Mr. Pope won his first murder case in May 1989 and has had an unparalleled track record since. As a renowned litigator, he has successfully tried a wide range of complex cases from white collar to capital murder. Through the years, he has won millions of dollars for his clients in civil cases, most recently winning a judgment of $7.9 million in a paraplegic personal injury cases. Anthony J. Pope has been named "Super Lawyer" by his peers, an honor recognizing him as one of the state's best attorneys every year from 2005 to the present.

Mr. Pope has tried some of the highest profile cases in the state, and his firm provides specialized legal services concentrating in criminal law, personal injury law, administrative law, and civil litigation.

A New Jersey native, he earned his J.D. from Rutgers University School of Law. After graduation, he served as an Assistant Prosecutor in Essex County where he successfully tried 25 cases in Superior Court. After leaving the prosecutor's office, he was the managing partner in the law firm of Pope, Bergrin and Verdesco, P.A. before becoming the new founding partner of his successor firm - the Law Office of Anthony J. Pope - in Newark, New Jersey.

Mr. Pope's passion for justice and maintaining the integrity of the legal system developed early. At 19, he entered the police force and by 21, he became one of the youngest detectives in the state. That, perhaps, explains the many law enforcement officers who have sought his expertise. His success in their defense, as well as his successful representation of other clients, stemming from white collar crimes ( political corruption, misconduct, fraud, etc.) to capital murder ( first degree, vehicular homicide, assault, weapons and drug offenses) has set him apart as one of New Jersey's leading attorneys. In 1994, he was named "Attorney of the Year" by the Newark Policeman's Benevolent Association (PBA), as well as being honored by the National Police Defense Foundation.

As a certified criminal defense attorney and legal expert, he is consistently called upon to give legal opinions for various newspapers and periodicals and is a lecturer for the New Jersey Institute of Continuing Legal Education. He has been a guest commentator for Court TV since the network's inception and has appeared on several news programs including CBS, ABC, NBC, as well as "Dateline", Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes", "60 Minutes", and CN8'S "It's Your Call".

Mr. Pope is a member of the Bars of New Jersey, New York and Washington, D.C., as well as the United States Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.

In addition to the legal community, he is also active in the Italian-American community. He is a regular supporter of the Washington, D.C. -based National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) and in 1997 was honored by the Italian Tribune News, as "Italian American of the Year." In 2006, he was recognized by the Columbian Foundation as "Humanitarian of the Year."
