About Deborah Beth Kahn

Deborah Kahn is an attorney of deep experience who combines three decades worth of skill with the sensitivity and compassion necessary to address the often difficult and emotional issues in which she specializes. Ms. Kahn has been a duly licensed attorney in the State of New York since 1985, during which time Ms. Kahn has primarily concentrated in matrimonial and family law. Ms. Kahn is a member of the New York State Bar Association and the Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York, and the Family Law sections of both associations. In addition, Ms. Kahn was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court in 2002.

Prior to the creation of Butterman & Kahn, LLP, Ms. Kahn maintained her own practice and previously was associated with several noted firms specializing in matrimonial law. She has represented both husbands and wives in all aspects of matrimonial litigation, including trials on a variety of issues in both the Supreme Court and Family Court, as well as numerous appeals.

Ms. Kahn has lectured and written on ethical issues facing the matrimonial practitioner for the Practicing Law Institute, and has been a lecturer for continuing legal education programs sponsored by the Queens County Women’s Bar Association and the Hadassah Attorneys’ Council.

A graduate of the State University of New York at Binghamton (B.A., 1979), and the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Yeshiva University (J.D., 1983), Ms. Kahn was the co-author of the New York Domestic Relations text for a major bar review course, and served as Northeast Regional Director and Faculty Member for the Kaplan-SMH Bar Review program. She has also served as an adjunct professor at Pace University, and as an advisor for high school teams participating in New York City’s Mock Trial Tournament.

Ms. Kahn has been sought out for her legal expertise and services in complex matrimonial and family law negotiations and litigation throughout her career. Among her reported cases representing ground breaking precedent are Gindi v. Gindi, N.Y.L.J. May 7, 2001, p. 31, col. 3 (a trial in which Ms. Kahn and Mr. Butterman prevailed in a case of first impression under New York’s “Get” law).

Ms. Kahn represents high income individuals, but, at the same time, does not turn away other worthy clients who require the skills of an experienced practitioner. She has recently served as a court-appointed neutral evaluator in several matrimonial matters in the New York County Supreme Court.

Ms. Kahn is committed to the practice of law in the finest tradition, zealously representing the clients she accepts, as well as making herself available to assist a variety of programs which benefit individual litigants and the Bar. She is particularly proud of her work as Co-chair of United States Supreme Court Swearing in Program Committee for Hadassah’s National Attorney’s Council; this program has introduced hundreds of attorneys and judges to the inner workings of the United States Supreme Court, and has allowed its participants to interface personally with the Justices and personnel of that vital institution.
