About Shelley R. Hammond Provosty

Over 35 years litigation experience in Louisiana state and federal courts. Formerly a partner in the firm of Montgomery, Barnett, Brown, Read, Hammond & Mintz where she practiced law for 26 years. Law clerk for United States District Judge Peter H. Beer, Eastern District of Louisiana, 1980-1981. Graduate of Wake Forest University, Winston Salem, North Carolina (B.A., 1977, cum laude) and Louisiana State University Law School (J.D., 1980).

Description of Practice:

Engaged in general civil litigation practice concentrating in casualty insurance defense, insurance coverage, products liability, transportation, construction and commercial litigation. Clients include national corporations, insurance companies, third party administrators and governmental entities. Ms. Provosty has handled or participated in many matters before state and federal courts, regulatory and administrative agencies, as well as matters concluded through alternative dispute resolution.

Insurance defense practice involves a wide range of personal injury and property damage litigation arising out of automobile, trucking, business premises, construction and industrial accidents. Litigation practice includes experience in various aspects of disaster litigation.

Professional Activities:

Active in a number of legal organizations including the Louisiana State Bar Association, Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel, American Bar Association and the Defense Research Institute (DRI). Ms. Provosty served as Chair of the DRI Task Force on Women in the Courtroom which published a white paper as a result of their study entitled “A Career in the Courtroom: A Different Model for the Success of Women Who Try Cases”. She recently served a two year term as Chair of the Professionalism Committee of the Louisiana State Bar Association (2006 to 2008). She has also served as Chair of the Attorney/Client Seminar for the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel.

Ms. Provosty served a three year term as a State Representative to the DRI (2002 to 2005), a two year term as a member of the Board of Directors of the Louisiana Association of Defense Counsel (2001 to 2003) and a three year term as a member of the Board of Governors from the First Board District of the Louisiana State Bar Association (1999 to 2002). She also served as a Vice-Chair of the Commercial Transportation Litigation Committee of the ABA Trial Tort and Insurance Practice (2004 to 2005).

She has participated as a speaker in a number of professional seminars and has lectured on the topics of insurance, transportation, professionalism and diversity.
