Robert was hired and paid to defend me against charges easily winnable with a jury trial. He suggested pleading "no contest", in other words, plead guilty when I wasn't. My concern was I had moved out of the county and wanted to get the case closed ASAP. Robert advised he had set up a deal where if I plead no contest I would receive 1 years light probation, report every few months. The day of sentencing, he reiterated that a deal was set, plead no contest and get probation when a jury trial would have absolved me completely.
He also said I was supposed to deny before the court that a deal had been promised, which was what the judge did ask. I almost told the truth about what Robert Hanwell promised, I wanted to. But I had known the Hanwell family for a long time and against better judgement, trusted him.
Imagine my surprise when sentence is read and the judge gives me 90 days in county jail and 1 year intense supervised probation. The plaintiffs had deeper pockets than I did,as I found out later, and Robert Hanwell lied to me for money.
Robert Hanwell never saw me again, never explained why he screwed me over. He didn't have to. I did learn a lesson or 2...., do not ever plead guilty to something you did not do, and if you do,get it from the prosecutor and in writing. Robert Hanwell was reported to the Medina County Bar Association and they asked if Hanwell had put the deal in writing anywhere. I said he had not and they advised he had covered his tracks well,as I was not the first client Hanwell had defrauded.
Be very wary of Robert Hanwell and any deals he may offer because his interests are not in you.
