About Haggerty and Haggerty

Trusted Indiana Legal Counsel Since 1955

The law firm of Haggerty and Haggerty was founded over 50 years ago. In 1955, brothers Judson F. Haggerty, a former Deputy Prosecutor, became a well-known and respected litigator for handling high profile criminal defense and personal injury cases. He tried some of the most serious murder cases that had worldwide coverage. Judson always took on tough, sometimes unpopular, issues. He was a champion of the underdog. His persistent spirit led him to run for political office and he served as a State Representative. Running for office certainly furthered his standing in the community. Judson also served as the Marion County Democratic Chairman, Deputy Prosecutor and personal counsel to Congressman Andy Jacobs.

Meanwhile, brother and firm partner Jay B. Haggerty handled other legal matters by representing south side businesses and becoming respected in the Courts as a probate and small business attorney. He served as a Court Commissioner and as First Magistrate of the Marion County Drug Court. Jay also took cues from Judson and ran for political office. Jay campaigned for a seat in the Indiana House of Representatives in the late 50s and served on the Sheriff's Board in Marion County in the 70s. A major responsibility while on the board included deciding who to retain and who to let go in the Marion County Criminal Court. In addition to these duties, he also handled case overload for Judge Trauberg.

As Judson F. Haggerty and Jay B. Haggerty entered the decade of the 80s, the law firm was still going strong. Jay B's sons were making plans to follow in the family footsteps and attend law school. However, the current partners were looking to hire an associate so the possibility of retirement could become more of a reality in the coming years. Jay B. Haggerty recruited William A. Maschmeyer - a lifelong southsider and a Deputy Attorney General under Lindley Pearson - and in 1987, the law school alum joined the firm to assist in the areas of criminal defense, personal injury, small business and estate planning. Once the associate gained momentum and made partner, the firm name was changed to Haggerty, Haggerty and Maschmeyer.

Shortly thereafter, firm co-founder Jay B. Haggerty's sons Jay J. Haggerty and Jon F. Haggerty graduated from law school and joined the firm. Jay focused on divorce and family law, estate planning and probate, as well as personal injury. Jon focused on bankruptcy, elder law, Medicaid planning and general civil and criminal litigation.

While Judson F. Haggerty deceased in 1997, Jay B. Haggerty remains of counsel to the firm by offering a wealth of experience and guidance on complicated business and probate matters. Brothers Jay J. Haggerty and Jon F. Haggerty, along with William A. Maschmeyer, continue the traditions of excellence established by their predecessors in the practice of law in the Indianapolis area, while maintaining a reputation for honesty and fair dealing with clients and other attorneys.

The firm is conveniently located ten minutes south of downtown Indianapolis, just north of Southern Plaza, near the intersection of Troy Avenue and Meridian Street. Parking is free and access is easy. The firm offers a free initial telephone consultation. If we cannot handle your case, we will refer you to someone who can. We offer mediation services for divorce and all civil disputes to those seeking to resolve their differences outside the Court.

Hired Law Firm

Jon Haggerty was recommended to me by a friend- the minute I walked in and met him, I was at ease! He is a caring man who knows his stuff. I don’t know how I would have gotten through all the red tape without him! I have been kept informed through all aspects of my business. I have put all my trust in him and it has been well worth it. Also a side note - Kevin was amazing as well!! Thank you !!!

Hired Law Firm

I used Jay to handle my dad's estate and worked with Jane throughout most the process. It was quick and painless. I also used Jay to handle my JP case and worked with a different paralegal. She was very rude - there's a soft side to her but for the most part she just made me feel like a huge inconvenience. If I used this firm again I would request a different paralegal.
