My Path to Family Law
I didn’t take the straight line from college to law school to law firm. My road had a few detours that shaped how I practice today:
Police Officer: I served with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, where I learned how to stay calm in chaos and resolve conflicts under pressure.
Army Officer: I spent years as a combat engineer officer in the U.S. Army, including deployment overseas. Leadership, discipline, and problem-solving under stress aren’t just words on a résumé—they’re second nature to me.
Law & Mediation: Eventually, I realized my skills translated perfectly into family law: dealing with disputes that are emotional, complicated, and deeply personal. I became an attorney and mediator, and Adkins Law was born.
Those experiences taught me to see the whole picture—not just the legal issues, but the people, the emotions, and the stakes behind every case.
What I Do
I focus exclusively on family law and civil litigation. That means:
Divorce and separation agreements
Child custody and visitation
Child support and alimony
Equitable distribution (property division)
Mediation and parenting coordination
Basically, if it affects your family, your kids, or your financial future, I’m the guy you want helping you sort it out.
How I Work
Here’s what you’ll get if you work with me:
Straight talk. No confusing jargon, no sugarcoating. I’ll tell you where you stand and what options you really have.
Balance. Some cases require aggressive courtroom advocacy. Others call for smart negotiation. Knowing when to turn up the heat and when to find common ground can save you time, money, and stress.
Child-first approach. In custody cases, kids come first. Full stop. Judges expect it, and frankly, it’s the right thing to do.
Accessibility. You won’t wonder where your lawyer went—I stay responsive and keep you in the loop.
Why Family Law?
Because it’s real. It’s about people and families, not faceless corporations. I like being the one who steps into a difficult moment and helps someone get through it with their dignity intact.
Some lawyers talk about “winning” in family law like it’s a football game. The truth is, the best outcomes are the ones that protect your future and your kids—not the ones that score points in court. That’s the kind of “win” I work toward.
The Human Side of Me
I know clients want to see the lawyerly stuff (and I’ve got that), but they also want to know they’re hiring a human being. So here’s me in a nutshell:
I’ve traveled to 45+ countries and circumnavigated the globe by ship.
I collect sports memorabilia and graded cards—so I get how personal collections can be when dividing property.
I’m a dad who leans into “dad jokes” (my kids roll their eyes, but they secretly laugh).
I’m usually at a local football game, tinkering with my rooftop tent truck project, or browsing at Barnes & Noble when I’m not in the courtroom.
All of that means I understand what matters to families because I’ve lived it.
What Clients Can Expect
Clients often tell me they felt calmer after meeting me—even when their situation was anything but calm. That’s important. In family law, you need an advocate who not only knows the statutes but also helps you see the forest through the trees.
With me, you can expect:
A steady hand in the middle of the storm.
Clear advice about your options.
Advocacy that’s tough when it needs to be, but practical when that serves you better.
A lawyer who genuinely cares about the outcome—not just the case file.
The Bottom Line
If you’re reading this, you’re probably dealing with one of the hardest things life throws at people. You need more than just a lawyer—you need someone you can trust to be your guide, your advocate, and sometimes even your reality check.
That’s how I approach every client who walks into Adkins Law. I’ve been tested under pressure, I’ve seen conflict from every angle, and I’ve built a career on helping people find solutions in the middle of chaos.
Whether it’s divorce, custody, support, or any other family law issue in Huntersville or around Lake Norman, I’d be glad to talk with you. Bring your questions and concerns—I’ll bring the experience, the strategy, and yes, maybe even a bad dad joke if it helps lighten the mood.
Because at the end of the day, family law isn’t just about cases. It’s about people, families, and futures. And that’s exactly why I do what I do.
