My family law appeals case was a simple one where the district judge abused discretion on awarding support payments that exceeded the guidelines substantially despite no proven need for the child and a former spouse who is intentionally under employed. A good attorney would have warned me that district courts have ridiculous free discretion in Texas and that any case based on the abuse of that discretion was unlikely to prevail in an appeal. Unfortunate my attorney Ellie Natenberg did the opposite. She coached me that we had a strong case, took my $20k retainer, used all of it (doing what I’m unclear) and then advised me that we didn’t have much of a case. I would not use them again.
