John Peterson is a director in the firm practicing in the area of civil litigation. He primarily represents physicians, long-term care facilities, hospitals and other healthcare providers in the defense of medical malpractice lawsuits. Mr. Peterson represents clients throughout all stages of the litigation process. He also has experience representing clients before the Supreme Court of Virginia and the Virginia Department of Health Professions.
Upon graduation from law school, Mr. Peterson began his legal career as an associate in a medical malpractice defense law firm in Northern Virginia in 1998. In addition to his experience as a litigator, Mr. Peterson also served for two years as corporate counsel for a company involved in the design, manufacture and distribution of durable medical equipment. It was in that role that he gained considerable experience in risk management. Mr. Peterson is admitted to practice before state courts in the Commonwealth of Virginia as well the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Virginia and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Throughout his career, Mr. Peterson has actively litigated a variety of medical malpractice cases in courts across Virginia. For example, he has litigated cases involving delayed diagnosis of various forms of cancer, including failure to diagnose and treat; birth injury cases; surgical complications; emergency and trauma medicine; orthopedics; neurology and neurosurgery; peripheral vascular issues; cardiac issues; radiology issues and equipment malfunction. Mr. Peterson has also represented clients in general civil litigation matters, including premises liability, breach of contract, and construction cases.
