Karen Halverson defended me in a parole matter. She was willing to meet in person, but the rest of the experience was disappointing and overpriced. She charges $425/hour and billed that rate for basic administrative tasks—like $85 just to reply to a billing email. She also billed an hour for an initial consultation I never agreed would be paid. In the end, she cost twice as much as two other attorneys who do similar work. I didn’t receive her written brief until the day of the hearing and never saw the exhibits beforehand, which caused her to miss a key defense argument I could have provided. After the hearing, she disappeared. It took more than a year—and a complaint to the bar—to get the leftover retainer back. She may be skilled, but the lack of preparation and overbilling weren’t worth it. If she has support staff now, maybe. If she’s still solo, I’d avoid her.
Hired based on receiving her information from my doctors office. At our first meeting she seemed knowledgeable and understanding. Over the next months as my treatment wrapped up and she needed to start managing my case, everything changed. She became rude at times, unprofessional, and acted as if I was a bother. She strung my case out for so long she almost let the statue of limitations run out, then had to scramble to file a lawsuit. I felt we were then disadvantaged in trying to get a fair settlement and as if she was really not interested in doing her best, more like she just wanted to get a few $ for herself, rather than what was fair for what I had suffered. In the end I accepted less than my case was worth, so I would not have to deal with my own attorney anymore and she ended up with half of what I did get. Then she withheld my settlement, she just could not seem to get around to mailing the check. Very unprofessional during most of the 2 years I dealt with her.
