How can I handle an old DUI charge if I'm no longer in the country?

You need to contact a local attorney and have them recall the warrant and resolve the case. Under California law section 977a, they can probably make all the necessary court appearances for you.

Should I hire a lawyer if I was arrested for a DUI?

Even the initial DMV hearing over the suspension of your license can be tricky. If in California, you were also likely provided notice of a court appearance for Arraignment upon being released. You may plead not guilty if you want at that hearing. If the case is not plea bargained, it will be set for Trial which typically involves complex procedures. The conventional wisdom is that the attorney will be able to get you a better plea bargain deal than you could on your own, or effectively try the case if forced to that.

Is there a way to keep your license and no suspension for DUI if needed for work?

Hudson Thomas Bair

DUI/DWI lawyer at Kapsack & Bair, LLP
Yes, if you elect to hire an attorney and fight your case both in court and at the DMV (a public defender cannot help you at the DMV) you have a chance at winning outright. Your chances are significantly less without an attorney, you should contact a DUI lawyer in your area and schedule a meeting to discuss what can be done to help achieve your goals.
